Approaches

cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT)

This model emphasizes how our thoughts and behaviours affect our mood. By uncovering and modifying unhelpful thoughts and behaviours, we can influence how we feel in more helpful ways.

Somatic Therapy

This model focuses on restoring the mind and body connection. It begins with gaining awareness of one’s body sensations, releasing stuck emotions, and learning to feel safer and more present in the moment.

INternal Family Systems (IFS)

This model views your mind as different “parts” (like an inner family) seeking to protect you. Through uncovering and understanding each part we can become more compassionate and connected to our truest self.

EYE MOVEMENT DESENSITIZATION & REPROCESSING (EMDR)

A structured therapy style that focuses on reprocessing stuck traumas using bilateral stimulation. Bilateral stimulation helps reprocess memories so that they feel less overwhelming.

Therapy is not one-size-fits-all. Each human is a complex mixture of culture, upbringing, strengths, life experiences, traumas, values, stages of life. As such, my evidence-based approaches focuses on honouring the blend that makes you who you are. This means that my approach may vary depending on your needs.

Dialectical behavioural therapy (DBT)

“Dialectical” refers to the notion that two opposing things can be true at the same time. As such, this theory works to cultivate acceptance and tools to handle life’s challenges.

Mindfulness-based

Mindfulness-based interventions are used in conjunction with other models to increase awareness of the here and now. It is also an effective way to manage stress, anxiety, and other conditions.

Emotion-focused therapy (EFT)

This model seeks to become aware, experience, uncover, and cultivate tools to regulate big emotions.

  • Yes and no.

When we talk about trauma, we often talk about experiences that have made a significant impact on our nervous system which can end up affecting our relationships, work, and overall wellbeing. The goal is to learn how to become safe in the body again before being okay talking about it with others. We work with the nervous system and not against it when it comes to trauma.

  • It all depends on your preferences and goals, treatment is not one size fits all. However, I generally encourage clients to engage in practicing skills outside of sessions. I view practice as an important part of the change making process. It is not required but rather a recommendation.
